    Students, practitioners and general public - Are you interested in working with current and formerly incarcerated/justice-involved individuals? Join us for an informative session led by Alexander Kokesh, MOT, OTR/L, QMHP!

    Learn about the conditions and obstacles this population faces. Additionally, you will learn ways OTPs can work with affected individuals using advocacy through local, state and federal organizations to improve quality of life.

    Who Should Attend: Open to anyone eager to expand their understanding of working with current and formerly incarcerated/justice-involved individuals and explore opportunities in the field (fieldwork, employment, etc.)

    About the Speaker:

    Alexander Kokesh is the Program Development Coordinator at LAITR (Life After Incarceration: Transition and Reentry). He obtained his Master of Occupational Therapy degree at Eastern Michigan University. Prior to this, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Behavioral Neuroscience at Michigan State University with a minor in French.

    Alex values his role at LAITR as he works to address historical gaps in care at a program and policy level. He believes that an empathetic approach to meaningful skill development and skill integration are imperative to client success. Alex is passionate about stoking change in how incarceration policy and rehabilitation efforts are implemented.

    Alex has experience working with populations affected by mental illness, substance use disorder, and developmental disorders. His professional interests include novel approaches in psychosocial rehabilitation, OT use of Acceptance Commitment Therapy, and mental health policy advocacy.

    About the Speaker:

    Dr. Robin Underwood has been an occupational therapist for almost 50 years. Throughout her career, she has specialized in providing community-based OT for a variety of organizations. She has been providing occupational therapy services to Gateway Domestic Violence Center women, teens, and children for almost 25 years. She is the co-author of two AOTA Position Papers on OT Services with Survivors of Domestic Violence and is currently working on the 3rd update.

    Aside from her degree in occupational therapy, Robin has a masters degree in health policy and administration and a PhD in Occupational Studies with a certificate in women's studies. Her dissertation research was about the occupations that female survivors of domestic violence perform to construct themselves to be successful while pursuing postsecondary education.

    Robin is a Professor Emerita of the Brenau University occupational therapy department. She primarily taught classes in mental health practice and led thesis groups and capstone research related to community practice areas.
