Guest Lecture: Arab American Occupational Therapy Group Lecture on Cultural Humility

This session addresses cultural humility in occupational therapy practice and professional communication. Differences between cultural humility and other terms used interchangeably will be highlighted. The topic is discussed considering the complex nature of a client’s diversity.

The Macro-Micro-Model of Diversity (MMMD) will be discussed, which offers strategies to employ cultural humility in clinical assessment and evaluation. The presentation will be interactive, where attendees will be asked to reflect on pictures of culturally diverse activities of daily living.

About the Speaker:

Ida Koraitem, OTD, OTR/L

Dr. Koraitem is an assistant professor at Long Island University where she teaches advance courses in pediatrics, human anatomy and kinesiology. Her primary clinical work is in the field of school-based practice and Autism spectrum disorder. Her current research agenda pertains to cultural and linguistic diversity amongst OT students and clients, and Arab-Immigrant and Refugee advocacy. She has over 10 years of global clinical experience within the healthcare, special needs and NGO spaces. As an educator, Dr. Koraitem prioritizes the need for students to be given equal opportunity and to find their voices in class and in their practice and will continue to uphold these ideals in order to advance diversity initiatives within the OT profession.
